The RBI was forced to respond after a rumour about the Rs 500 note emerged on social media. The RBI has disregarded all concerns made on social media about the authenticity of the note with the ‘star’ mark (*). In this scenario, the RBI has stated that if you have gotten a bank note with a star in the centre of the series, it is also valid as any other note.

What the RBI said

According to an RBI statement, the star symbol has been placed to the number panel on the note that will be issued in place of the incorrectly printed note. Upon seeing this star mark, some individuals compared it to another 500 rupee note and labelled it fraudulent or illegal, prompting the RBI to take notice and provide information. According to the Reserve Bank, notes with a star mark are issued instead of incorrectly printed notes in a bundle of notes with serial numbers. This star symbol is placed between the note’s number and the letters that will be entered before it.

What does the star mark on the note mean?

The Reserve Bank made it clear that the bank note with the star mark is lawful money just like any other. Its star simply indicates that it was issued in place of a revised or reprinted note. Let us remind you that the star note trend began in 2006 in order to make note printing easier and less expensive. Previously, the Reserve Bank would replace the incorrectly printed note with the proper note with the same number.
