Private schools of Kashmir are switching to the CBSE curriculum

In Kashmir, private schools are undergoing a big change as they move to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). They have filed for the School Education Department’s No Objection Certificate (NOC), which is a necessary step for CBSE affiliation. This action is in line with the government’s plan to introduce a unified curriculum beginning with the 2024–2025 school year.

Some schools started the application process months ago, while others are still working to obtain the NOC. The affiliation timeline was requested by the Ministry of Education in June 2023, but no word has been received since.

The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) and the administrative department’s meddling is one of the reasons private school owners want to become affiliated with the CBSE. Up to the CEO level, curriculum freedom is provided by the CBSE schools without hindrance.

This change also takes care of the problems with BOSE registration renewal, where about 200 schools are having problems with unfinished formalities and land. Private schools affiliated with the J&K Board have been instructed by the government to use BOSE-published textbooks for all subjects; any deviations will result in disciplinary action and/or registration cancellation.

The educational landscape in Kashmir is changing as private schools negotiate these procedural nuances with the goal of raising educational standards in the area.
