The government of Jammu and Kashmir declares winter break for degree colleges in stages starting on December 27.
Srinagar, December 21 (KNO): On Thursday, the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department announced the winter break schedule for all degree colleges in the Jammu and Kashmir Division. The breaks will be observed gradually, starting on December 27, 2023, and ending on February 14, 2024, in the Kashmir division.
Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, Alok Kumar, reportedly told the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that government degree colleges in the Kashmir region will observe their holidays from December 27, 2023, to February 14, 2024.
The principal secretary added that starting on the date set for degree colleges in the Kashmir division, all GDCs in the Jammu division that are located in the Winter Zone will observe their winter holidays.
On the other hand, the Jammu division’s GDCs that fall under the summer zone will observe vacations from January 1 to January 10, 2024.
Relevantly, on November 30, the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department issued an order mandating that all government degree colleges in the Kashmir region begin offering online courses on December 1, 2023.
“Students enrolled in Government Degree Colleges of Kashmir Division are facing major challenges in commuting to college and, thereby, attending classes,” stated Dr. Ravi Shanker Sharma, Special Secretary to the Government, in a communiqué.
It states, “Situation has become worse due to disruption to regular class work with inadequate heating arrangements.”
The announcement goes on to say that students are facing extreme hardship because of the early start of the harsh winter because they are now required to travel long distances, stay in hostels, or rent private accommodations as a result of the implementation of admission based on merit and choice.
“It is impressed upon all the Principals of Government Degree Colleges of Kashmir Division that classes will be conducted via online mode from December-01-2023 till December-31-2023 or until winter vacations are announced, whichever is earlier,” the text states, ensuring unhindered academic delivery in adverse and extreme cold conditions.—(KNO)
